A Lesson in Knowledge: An Overview of the Causes Behind the Fogging Effect in Plastic Packaging Bags

When plastic packaging bag manufacturers’ products exhibit a fogging effect during use, what causes this phenomenon?

Qingdao Platinum Packaging Technology Co., Ltd. is a manufacturing enterprise specializing in plastic flexible packaging, encompassing the research and development of new plastic materials, printing, lamination, slitting, bag-making, and related R&D. The company’s production base is located in the Jiaobei Industrial Park, Jiaozhou City, Qingdao, while its business operations and R&D center are situated in the Shinan District of Qingdao. With many years of experience, the company produces high‑quality plastic flexible packaging materials and comprehensive packaging solutions. Its main product lines include: laminated plastic packaging bags, color‑printed packaging bags, food‑grade packaging bags, vacuum‑sealed bags, retort pouches, low‑temperature frozen‑food bags, cat litter bags, and rolls of automatic packaging films for food and medical applications, as well as transfer printing films, warning tapes, flagging tapes, bird‑repellent tapes, and cable ties for air conditioners, among others.

Plastic packaging bag During use, if a manufacturer’s product exhibits atomization issues, what are the underlying causes?

Because plastic packaging bags are primarily made from transparent plastic films and sheets, in humid environments, when the relative humidity falls below the dew point, a layer of tiny water droplets forms on the surface, causing it to become hazy and obstructing light transmission—resulting in fogging. For instance, when products are packaged in such films, fogging can obscure the contents, and the resulting droplets may even accelerate the degradation of the packaged goods. Antifogging agents are additives designed to prevent this fogging phenomenon; they consist of hydrophilic surfactants that orient themselves at the surface, enabling water to readily wet the plastic and allowing condensed droplets to spread rapidly into an extremely thin water film or large droplets that flow downward.

This means that, during the production of plastic packaging bags, such an anti-fogging agent must be added to prevent water droplets formed by fogging from splashing onto the package and causing damage.
